Crunching the Numbers: Money Spent on Gas

    Last updated 6 years ago

Gas prices just keep on getting higher. Perhaps you’ve been considering bicycling as an alternative form of transportation, but aren’t sure the savings would be worth the initial cost. Bicycles can be expensive investments, but often quickly pay for themselves in fuel savings, especially if you choose to buy a simple Dutch or road bike. Here’s what you’ll be saving by commuting by bicycle instead of by car.

    • The average car gets about 25 miles per gallon. With fuel costs these days averaging around $4 a gallon, that means every mile costs you about 16 cents. If you, like most people, drive about 200 miles per week, you’re spending about $100 a month on gas. Investing in a commuter bike could help you curb fuel costs substantially.
    • Imagine if you started using a city bike or commuter bike half of the time you would ordinarily be driving your car. You could commute to work, or if your work place is extremely far, use your bicycle for frequent short trips and errands you run throughout the week.
    • A good commuter bike, depending on the style and model, will cost about $500. That might seem like a lot to spend, but if you replaced all your driving with biking, you could recoup that cost in five weeks! Even if you only use your bicycle to run errands around town, within 10 months of riding you’ll probably break even. You’ll also benefit from the exercise and do your part to save the planet and reduce our dependency on oil.

Now all you need is that bike. Come visit us at our new store, A Street Bike Named Desire of Palo Alto. Visit our website or call us at (888) 821-6831 to find out about the variety of bikes we have available for your new lifestyle.

Check out our new website and come to our store opening on Saturday June 18 at 10am!
