4 Essential Qualities to Look for in a Commuter Bike

Last updated 7 years ago

Commuting by bicycle can be one of the best things you can do for your health, your wallet, your community, and the planet. Luckily, there are many options for you to choose from. City bikes, mountain bikes, Dutch bikes, and folding bikes are just some of the options available to you.  So, how do you choose the right commuter bike?

  1. Consider the type of terrain you’ll regularly be riding on.  If you’ll be transitioning from a bicycle commute to something like a bus ride or carpool, then you may consider a folding bike for easier transport.  City bicycle riding is fast and fun with a good set of road tires, but don’t forget a helmet!
  2. Choose a commuter bicycle that’s comfortable.  If you’re not used to riding often, then any bike may feel a little uncomfortable at first.  However, after a short period of time adjusting to the bike, your seat shouldn’t cause you any discomfort.  Your handle bars should also be lined with tape or rubber for a comfortable grip.
  3. What kind of storage add-ons will you need?  If you can fit everything in a backpack, then you might not need the addition of a basket.  But, if you carry a briefcase or prefer not wearing a backpack, then a rear or front basket might be good for your commuter bike.  Conveniently, there are many basket styles and models to choose from.
  4. Lastly, you need a reputable bike store and a test ride. Always test ride a commuter bike before you buy it to be sure it’s a good fit for you.
